LoopCast › Lobby TV slideshow

Put a slideshow on a lobby TV from a laptop.

A lobby TV should show something useful all day without anyone babysitting it. A spare laptop and a free app are enough.

The setup

  1. Place the laptop near the TV and connect it with HDMI (or a USB-C to HDMI adapter). Plug the laptop into power.
  2. Extend the display: on Windows press Windows + P and choose Extend; on a Mac use System Settings › Displays.
  3. Make a folder called something like “Lobby” and put your pictures, videos and PDFs in it.
  4. Open LoopCast, choose the folder, press Show on projector, then press play.

Keep it running all day

  • The LoopCast desktop app keeps the computer awake while it plays. In a browser, set the computer’s sleep to “never” while the sign is on.
  • Turn off notifications and automatic restarts for updates during opening hours.
  • If the TV has its own sleep or eco timer, turn that off too.

Update it without interrupting

Drop new files into the folder, or delete old ones. LoopCast picks up the changes the next time the loop comes around, so the screen never goes blank while you edit.

What to show

  • Today’s events and rooms, the Wi-Fi name and password, and a welcome message.
  • Upcoming dates, staff photos or a short video about your organization.
  • Your logo between messages. Name an image logo.png and press H to show it any time.

More ideas for lobbies, offices and schools are on the digital signage page.

Ready when the doors open.

Your computer will show a security warning the first time you open it. That’s expected. Here’s why, and what to click.
